If the thought of visiting the dentist makes your heart race, you're not alone. Around 1 in 4 adults feel anxious about dental visits. At Park Dental Care in Nottingham, we see nervous clients every day — and we've learned what actually helps.
Why Dental Anxiety is So Common
Dental anxiety often stems from past experiences — perhaps a painful treatment as a child, or feeling rushed and not listened to. Sometimes it's the sounds, smells, or simply feeling out of control. Whatever the cause, your feelings are valid and we take them seriously.
What Actually Helps
Tell us upfront. When you book, mention that you're nervous. We'll note it and ensure everyone on the team knows to take extra care.
Ask questions. Understanding what's happening and why removes the fear of the unknown. We'll explain everything in plain English before we start.
Agree a signal. Raise your hand if you need us to stop at any point. You're always in control.
Start small. Your first visit can just be a chat and a look around. No treatment unless you're ready.
Bring headphones. Music or podcasts can help block out sounds that trigger anxiety.
How We Help Nervous Clients
Our team is trained to work with anxious clients. We never rush, we explain as we go, and we check in regularly. Our appointments are longer than average so there's never any sense of hurry.
We also offer: - Gentle numbing techniques so you don't feel injections - Breaks whenever you need them - A calm, unhurried environment - The same dentist each visit so you build familiarity
Taking the First Step
The hardest part is making that first call. We understand. When you're ready, call us on 0115 910 1447 — mention you're nervous and we'll take it from there. Many of our most loyal clients started out terrified. Now they come regularly and some even say they don't mind it.
