Your retainers are the key to keeping your orthodontic results. Here's how to look after them — and why it matters.
Why Retainers Matter So Much
Without retainers, your teeth will move. This isn't pessimism — it's biology. Teeth have elastic memory and naturally drift toward their original positions.
We've seen beautiful results lost within months by clients who stopped wearing retainers. Don't let that be you.
Fixed Retainer Care
The wire bonded behind your teeth needs attention:
- Brush carefully: Angle your toothbrush to clean along the wire and around attachment points
- Use interdental aids: Floss threaders, interdental brushes, or water flossers
- Check regularly: Run your tongue along it daily — if it feels loose or rough, call us
- Hygienist visits: Essential for cleaning areas you can't reach
Removable Retainer Care
Daily cleaning:
- Brush with a soft toothbrush and cold water
- Use clear, unscented soap or retainer cleaner
- Never use toothpaste (too abrasive)
- Never use hot water (causes warping)
Weekly deep clean:
- Soak in retainer cleaning tablets
- Rinse thoroughly before wearing
Storage
When not wearing your removable retainer:
- Always use the case provided
- Never wrap in tissue (gets thrown away)
- Keep away from pets (dogs love them)
- Don't leave in hot cars or near heat
How Often to Wear Them
First year post-treatment: Every night, no exceptions.
Long-term: Most people need retainers indefinitely, reducing to a few nights per week over time. Listen to what we recommend based on your case.
If they feel tight: You've not been wearing them enough. Increase wear immediately.
When to Replace
Removable retainers don't last forever:
- Replace every 1-2 years typically
- Sooner if they crack, warp, or become cloudy
- If they no longer fit snugly
