Toothache can be excruciating — and it always seems to happen at the worst time. Here's how to manage the pain while you wait to see us, and when you need to come in urgently.

Severe Sharp Pain

Sharp, stabbing pain often indicates nerve involvement or a crack.

Immediate relief:

- Take ibuprofen 400mg (avoid if asthmatic or on blood thinners)

- Apply oil of cloves directly to the tooth with a cotton bud

- Avoid very hot or cold food and drinks

- Don't chew on that side

Seek treatment within 48 hours — this type of pain usually indicates a problem that won't resolve on its own.

Dull Aching or Throbbing Pain

Constant aching often suggests infection or inflammation.

Pain management:

- Alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol every 2 hours (this is more effective than taking them together)

- Example: Ibuprofen at 8am, paracetamol at 10am, ibuprofen at 12pm, etc.

- Rinse with warm salt water 3-4 times daily

- Sleep with your head slightly elevated

Warning signs requiring urgent care:

- Facial swelling

- Fever

- Difficulty swallowing

- Pain spreading to ear or eye

Sensitivity to Hot and Cold

If your teeth hurt with temperature but the pain goes away quickly:

  • Apply Sensodyne Rapid Relief toothpaste directly to the sensitive area
  • Leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing
  • Use a soft toothbrush and sensitive toothpaste regularly
  • Avoid very hot or cold food temporarily

This is often manageable but worth mentioning at your next dental health assessment.

Pain When Biting

Pain only when you bite down often indicates a cracked tooth or high filling.

  • Avoid chewing on that side
  • Stick to soft foods
  • Take pain relief as needed
  • Book an appointment — we need to investigate the cause

Cracked teeth can worsen quickly, so don't delay.
