IV Conscious Sedation Nottingham

A calmer way to approach dental treatment.

If anxiety makes dental care difficult, IV conscious sedation may help. At Park Dental Care, we can discuss your concerns and assess whether it is a suitable option for your treatment.

Relaxed, but still conscious.

IV conscious sedation involves giving a sedative through a small tube in a vein. You remain conscious and able to respond to the dental team, but often feel relaxed and drowsy. You may remember little of the appointment afterwards.

It is not general anaesthesia. Sedation helps with anxiety; it does not replace pain relief. Local anaesthesia may still be needed to numb the area being treated.

Planning your care

Is IV sedation right for you?

Suitability depends on an individual assessment, your medical history, any medicines you take and the dental treatment planned. IV sedation is not suitable for everyone.

Please tell us about health conditions, allergies, prescribed and non-prescribed medicines, and any previous problems with sedation or anaesthesia. Do not change your medicines unless advised by your treating clinician.

Monitoring and possible risks

The team will monitor you during sedation and recovery, including your breathing, oxygen levels and pulse.

Possible risks include bruising at the injection site, nausea, reduced breathing or oxygen levels, and an unexpected reaction to the medicine. Your clinician will discuss relevant risks, benefits and alternatives with you before you consent.

Before, during and after your appointment.

You will receive written instructions tailored to your care. Please ask if anything is unclear before your appointment.

  1. Prepare with clear instructions

We will provide eating and drinking instructions and explain arrangements for a responsible adult escort. Follow the instructions given to you rather than general advice found elsewhere.

  2. Treatment with monitoring

The team will check your understanding and consent, give the sedation and monitor you throughout. Local anaesthesia may also be used for the planned dental treatment.

  3. Leave with an aftercare plan

You will be assessed before leaving with your escort. Written aftercare will explain supervision, restrictions on activities such as driving and work, and who to contact with concerns. Feeling alert does not necessarily mean the effects have worn off.

For referring dentists.

Refer a patient for consideration of IV conscious sedation. Please include the reason for referral, proposed dental treatment, relevant medical history and current medicines. Referral does not confirm suitability; assessment is needed before a treatment plan can be agreed.
