The Hidden Cost of Delayed Orthodontic Treatment: What Nottingham Parents Need to Know

Every week at Park Dental Care I meet families who have been waiting far longer than they ever expected for orthodontic advice. Recent UK figures show that long delays are now common, and many children are being seen well past the ideal time for orthodontic intervention. It is understandable that parents hope things will settle on their own, but the truth is that orthodontic issues rarely improve without guidance.

At Park Dental Care we provide a full range of teeth straightening options for children in Nottingham. These include conventional braces, white braces, and Invisalign. Modern orthodontics has changed significantly and the advances that transformed adult treatment are now available to younger people too. Braces today are more discreet, more comfortable and far easier to keep clean. I often see children grow in confidence once they begin treatment because they feel supported and understand what is happening.

It is also worth noting that NHS orthodontics rarely includes Invisalign. Metal braces are usually the only option available on the NHS and only when strict criteria are met, which is one of the reasons I am seeing more families across Nottingham choosing private orthodontics.

The Cost of Waiting

When orthodontic treatment is delayed, several problems can develop.

Worsening crowding

  • As adult teeth come through, limited space becomes even tighter. Mild crowding can progress to severe misalignment that may later require extractions.

Crossbites become harder to correct

  • A crossbite can push the jaw to one side, creating facial imbalance and uneven wear. Early correction is far simpler.

Overbites and underbites deepen

  • Growth patterns can exaggerate bite issues. If left too long, some cases may need surgical correction in the later years.

Speech issues may develop

  • Misaligned teeth can affect certain sounds and these habits can become more difficult to change later.

Tooth wear and enamel damage

  • Poor alignment can cause teeth to meet in the wrong places, leading to premature wear.

Higher risk of decay and gum problems

  • Crowded teeth trap plaque and make brushing less effective.

Jaw pain and headaches

  • Bite problems can strain the jaw joints and surrounding muscles.

What Our Clients Say

I am always grateful when families share their experiences. William Bumby has been visiting Park Dental Care for 25 years and his daughter recently completed her orthodontic treatment with us. He wrote:

“Last month the braces came off and her teeth are lovely to look at. Her teeth only took 12 months using braces. We assumed it would take 2 years. She used to be a thumb sucker but not any more, she realises the importance of looking after your teeth.”

Sharon Marshall also came to see us after her son felt unsure about treatment following an NHS appointment.

“The team at Park Dental Care took the time to explain why his teeth needed straightening and potential consequences of leaving them. We are extremely grateful to the team as without them, he would have not gone ahead with treatment. His future self will be forever thankful.”

Another parent, Garreth Wilcock, told us that his son looked forward to each visit and enjoyed seeing his progress.

Why Early Action Matters

Children’s jaws are soft and adaptable; we can guide growth and prevent problems from becoming more complex. When a child needs help with crowding, crossbites or developing bite problems, time really does matter.
