Whether you've just moved to Nottingham or you're looking for a change, finding the right dentist matters. Here's what to look for — and what to avoid.
Check They're Registered
Every dentist must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC). You can check any dentist's registration at gdc-uk.org.
The practice should also be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and display their rating.
Look for Transparency
Good signs: - Clear pricing on website or available on request - Explanation of what's included in fees - No pressure to commit to expensive treatment - Written treatment plans before starting
Warning signs: - Vague or hidden pricing - Pressure to decide immediately - Surprise charges after treatment
Read Reviews Carefully
Google reviews give insight into client experiences. Look for:
- Comments about being listened to
- Mentions of clear explanations
- How emergencies are handled
- Staff manner and environment
A few negative reviews among many positive ones is normal. Look at how the practice responds to criticism.
Consider What Matters to You
Different people prioritise different things:
- Location: Is it convenient for home or work?
- Hours: Do they offer evening or weekend appointments?
- Specialisms: Do they offer the treatments you might need?
- Anxiety support: Important if you're a nervous client
- Technology: Modern equipment often means better care
Ask About Their Approach
A good practice will:
- Welcome your questions
- Explain things in plain English
- Give you time to decide
- Offer options, not just one solution
- Be honest if they can't help and refer appropriately
Your First Visit
Use your first appointment to assess the practice:
- Were you greeted warmly?
- Did the dentist listen?
- Were things explained clearly?
- Did you feel rushed?
- Were costs discussed openly?
Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it's okay to look elsewhere.
